Strength in Vulnerability: A Conversation About Anorexia S2E7
Halley Stocks has always been a high achiever and from the outside looking in, most would never have suspected the inner turmoil she dealt with in her late adolescence and even sometimes today. Despite good grades, varsity athletics, and generally being accepted by her peers, she never felt like she was enough. The invisible workings of her mind began to match her outward appearance around the age of 16 when she began manipulating food and exercise to mitigate her emotional unrest. Halley was clinically diagnosed with anorexia at age 17 and hospitalized for the first time. She was discharged weeks later after a brief refeeding period but her brain was far from healed and after 4 years battling the condition through her college years, she admitted herself to another program at the age of 21.
Anorexia itself is far from invisible... you can see the pale sunken face, the emaciated body, and the protruding bones... but what you can't see is the storm of unsettled emotions beneath the surface. The depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and the desperate desire to feel worthy of taking up space on this planet and hidden behind the food. Today, Halley is proud of the woman she has become. She is an accomplished Doctor of Physical Therapy and Integrative Health Coach with a passion for rock climbing and all things outdoors but the journey between rehab at the age of 21 and where she is today at the age of 37 has been anything but easy.
Today we'll talk about what anorexia looked like for Halley, what the process of true recovery has been like, and how even today, she has to actively manage and mitigate some of the brain patterns that lead to her condition years ago, but that's the difference. Today, she knows that she can do that.

Rachel Zemach became Deaf at age ten, in an accident. As a teenager, she was thrilled to discover the charged, idiosyncratic Deaf world and the lavishly expressive and comprehensive, 3-D language of ASL (American Sign Language.)
Later, while raising two children and running a mosaic tile business, she got a Deaf education teaching credential, and began teaching a Deaf class in a public school ""mainstream program"" near her home.
After ten years of teaching in both this hearing school and a renowned all-Deaf school, Rachel decided to write a memoir of this experience, in order to educate others, improve the lot of Deaf children and try to start a national dialogue about mainstream Deaf education.
In The Butterfly Cage, readers will meet individual students, watch raucous and often surprising class discussions, and see Rachel’s personal journey as her identity undergoes a dramatic shift. Even those with no previous knowledge of this topic will come away with an intimate understanding of the issues most pertinent to Deaf people, of all ages.
Rachel lives with her husband, whose signing is not great, which may be why he calls her his hamburger instead of his wife.

The night of August 14th, 2021, Zak Clayton was involved in a life-altering motorcycle accident that left him stranded in a roadside ditch for an agonizing 7 hours. A pair of compassionate fishermen discovered him the following morning and got him help. His injuries included Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), concussive trauma, brain hemorrhage, as well as fractures to his skull and facial bones.
Zak now lives with daily migraine headaches, cognitive endurance challenges, and sudden confusion and alterations in attitude. His life oscillates unpredictably between moments of productivity and days of being fixed on the couch, needing to shield himself from sensory stimuli such as noise, light, and sound.
Nonetheless, Zak remains resolute in his commitment to ensure that every day includes some form of progress and, more significantly, the opportunity to assist others in need. He has discovered that even the simplest acts of kindness, such as helping someone get dressed, dispel any notion of uselessness. By uplifting others in need, he finds his own strength and fulfillment.
To this end, Zak founded Community Pay it Forward, with a mission to empower individuals, businesses, and charitable missions to make a positive impact in their communities. Community Pay it Forward has a system to generate funds for non-profits and, just as important, the program fosters community through networking, storytelling, and relationship building. By connecting individuals and businesses, we create a true win/win/win/win situation for the greater good.

My life with fitness began when I was in elementary school, playing basketball with the boys & attending practices and sporting events of my brothers’. Most of the travel we did as a family was based around soccer and baseball tournaments, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I continued playing basketball into junior high and managing all the sports teams of the school.
My life with personal training began when my aunt bought me my first gym membership at 15-years-old, which I ended up getting for free by the next month, cleaning equipment for the gym. I then began working with the personal training team there, teaching “how to use the equipment” classes. This exposure to the gym environment continued through high school, as an intern, and into college as I studied Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports & Fitness Management. I graduated in 2007 with a B.A., Magna Cum Lade. Upon graduation, I continued in the gym industry, breaking ground of the biggest gym to come to town as their personal trainer. For years to come, I continued to personal train for gyms, in addition to gym management and sales. In 2015, I branched out on my own, became my own boss, and I have run my own personal training business since; providing clients with natural health for body and mind, through exercise, clean nutrition and supplementation, and therapies.
Although, my life with health began only 5 years ago. Interesting how I was always in the fitness industry, but never “into health.” What I mean by this, is I have also had a past with mental health and substance abuse in-order to self-medicate my mental aliments. You see, I was never aware I suffered from anxiety, depression and ADHD until later in my life, after I had thrown my life away to drugs and alcohol in order to coop and “survive.” I had no knowledge of what my mental health had done to me until I hit one of my many rock bottoms 5 years ago. This time, my newfound therapist friend introduced me to LENS & Healy frequency therapies. This therapy was the first time in my life that I experienced the release of alcohol & drugs from me; the first time I felt the need that I DIDN’T need the substances. I began weaning myself off prescribed medications I had been wrongly prescribed for almost 20 years; medications that almost took my life! I also began to realize why I always loved working out-it was for my mental health! I have worked out at least 5 days a week since I was 15 to relieve my mental anxieties, depression and ADHD; my healthy appearance and insides are just the un-denying, positive side effect of the exercise.
In addition to the frequency therapies, EMDR therapy, clean nutrition and supplementation, continual exercise, and the practice of grounding, I have been medication and drug free for 5 years now. Because of my trials & tribulations with substance abuse and self-medicating before I became educated, I now can use my story to help others, maybe even life-saving. I know my life was saved 5 years ago, and I know yours can be too! You’ve just got to want it for yourself, though, want if enough that you’re willing to try something you never have! And, don’t stop exercising!

By the age of 25, Sander Van Stee’s testosterone levels had dropped lower than what is normal for a 90-year-old. He became obsessed with health and longevity. He tried a vegan diet for years but continued to get more food sensitivities. After seeing many specialists and trying fasting, cold exposure, and improving his sleep, he still didn’t feel well. Sander knows what it means to be unwell and what it feels like to desperately want to get better. Sander realized that not only is the old adage “you are what you eat” true, but it’s also true that we are what our food ate.
As Sander was searching for health solutions, he started learning about regenerative agriculture and implementing the methodology. It took him 6 years to regain his health. Now Sander is married to a beautiful wife and is a proud dad to 4 boys. Sander is also proud to be shifting his commercial dairy farm to be more and more in alignment with regenerative agriculture.

Shari Bookstaff had fulfilled her lifelong childhood dreams and was a tenured marine biology professor near San Francisco. She was thriving in her career and her personal life when sporadic dizzy spells and nausea led to a diagnosed benign brain tumor. Even though this was a large tumor that had to removed immediately, it would be an “easy, routine surgery.” Then, the unthinkable happened. A 9-day hospital stay turned into 9 months of grueling rehabilitation. A stroke following the surgery took away Shari’s ability to breathe, eat, talk, hear and move. After several weeks in the hospital during which Shari was fed through a tube and breathed through machines, she was transferred to a rehabilitation center an hour away from her home. The only thing giving Shari the will to live was the love and devotion of her kids, then 12 and 8 years old. She has worked hard every day since to regain her dignity, her livelihood, and her spirit. Shari is living proof that determination, hard work, and positivity are the cornerstones to overcoming tragedy. Shari chronicles her medical journey in her book, “When Life Throws You Lemons…Make Cranberry Juice!”
The fundamental message in Shari’s book is to look for and accept positive entities into your heart, even amid raging lemons. These positive entities (“cranberries”) will enhance your ability to cope with lemons. Actions that make a difference have always been a cranberry for Shari. She took a leadership role in Expanding Your Horizons, a conference which exposes young girls to STEM fields and established a local chapter of a national whale and dolphin conservation organization, the American Cetacean Society. Following the inconsistent level of compassion and empathy she received from medical professionals after brain surgery, she founded the nonprofit Lifetime of Impact! to provide inspiration to healthcare students by presenting her story and offering tangible tips to improve their connection to patients. Shari later founded Impact of Empathy, leading workshops for companies that covet enhanced customer service skills, greater employee retention, and a cooperative workplace atmosphere. Special workshops for healthcare professionals reveal the secret sauce of patient engagement.
